Capital Renovations
Center in the Square's renovation and renewal project will transform over 200,000 square feet of space on the historic market square into new memories and new experiences. Visitors will walk with butterflies in a new indoor habitat; children will gaze at colorful fish, jellyfish, and seahorses in live coral aquariums; students will interact with the latest electronics; and families will experience demonstrations of solar, wind, and green roof technologies that support the future sustainability of our planet.
The complete renovation of Center in the Square will improve all the spaces and mechanics utilized by our beneficiary organizations. It is a $27 million project that will be funded by approximately $18 million in tax credits and $9 million in contributions. Ground breaking for phase one renovations is planned for the first quarter of 2011.
This exciting project will once again transform and invigorate the downtown Roanoke experience. It will leverage resources and serve as a catalyst that will influence the future of our community. It is a pathway for success that brings next generation thinking into the unique character of what sets Roanoke apart from other communities. This is an effort that symbolizes the kind of community we wish to be.
